Huntly ran out two-nil winners in their first friendly match ahead of the 2015/16 season with an impressive performance away to Lowland League side Spartans.

Gregg Carrol’s side went with a new-look attacking formation with new signings Neale Allan, Sean Croll, James Duguid and Dean Donaldson all starting.

The visitors came close after six minutes when an Adam McNamee knockdown setup Craig Dorrat who drilled wide. McNamee came close himself moments later, Spartans captain Alistair Mackinnon headed the ball over his own goalkeeper and as McNamee looked to take advantage from the lapse Mackinnon made a last ditch clearance to deny the winger a goal.

Former Dundee player Eddie Malone was a start for Spartans at left back and the defender who scored against Huntly in the Scottish Cup back in 2007/08 came close to opening the scoring heading wide after Alexander Thoirs was penalised for a foul out wide.

Spartans looked to try to hit Huntly on the counter attack when they could and almost produced a goal from forward Keith Murray whose shot on the turn from outside the area rolled narrowly wide of the bottom corner.

New signing Dean Donaldson’s link-up play up front had created a number of chances for the black and gold’s and he turned provider for Dorrat who took a shot only for Spartan’s trialist right back to get in a crucial block.

Adam McNamee was a constant threat down the right inside the first half and the former Dyce winger played in a dangerous cross into the head of James Duguid who saw a header wide.

A switch of play from Donaldson into Adam McNamee saw the winger drag back onto his left foot and fire in a shot only for Malone to stick out a leg to divert the ball behind for a corner.

There were further chances at both ends as the half drew to a close. Gary McNamee saw a header held by Blair Carswell after John Urquhart and Neale Allan worked in a short corner while a Keith Murray shot landed on the roof of the net at the other end with a minute of the half remaining.

Half-Time: Spartans 0 Huntly 0

Two minutes into the second half the black and golds took the lead. The McNamee brothers combined before getting the ball in from the right flank and with Blair Carswell failing to hold the ball when challenged by Dean Donaldson it fell to Craig Dorrat who hit right-footed shot over the head of the home goalkeeper and into the net.

Dorrat who was playing in a wide attacking role came close again this time with a header after he met a long free kick from Gary Davidson.

Just before the hour mark the visitors doubled their lead when they got forward on the counter attack. Dean Donaldson played in Adam McNamee on the right flank and he ran before letting fly with a great strike high into the net.

Spartans should’ve pulled one back in the 68th minute when substitute Blair Atkinson fluffed a shot from mere yards out. Aaron Mitchell came close for the home side eight minutes later rounding Huntly’s trialist goalkeeper and drilling in a shot from a wide position but a last gasp clearance from Neal Allan kept the ball out.

Huntly were playing some good passing football on the artificial surface and teenage midfielder Sean Fraser got forward into an attacking position and saw a shot bounce wide of the upright as the visitors looked to add a third.

Dean Donaldson’s performance in attack had merited a goal and the former Inverurie Loco Works’ winger came close again heading wide from an Aaron Scoular corner.

With a minute to go, Huntly were denied by the woodwork when a Sam Harrison shot struck the base of the post after the winger got to a Lewis Ingram cross.
