Huntly finally got their Scottish Cup first round tie with Cumbernauld Colts played at the fifth time of asking seeing off the Lowland League opposition in a 3-1 victory to set up a trip to Dumbarton.

The tie would eventually take place at Cove’s Balmoral Stadium with Christie Park under heavy frost since the original date of the 26th December.

Huntly made one change from the side which drew their last fixture with Lossiemouth as Cameron Booth came in to captain the side with Cai Matthew dropping onto the bench.

Cumbernauld took an early lead breaking the deadlock in the second minute with William Mortimer getting clear of Joe Gauld and he burst down the right flank before his delivery was met by Fraser Team to drill home.

Gavin Elphinstone created an opening for himself in the twelfth minute before shotting wide.

Huntly drew level after 29 minutes. Rhys Thomas delivered a dangerous cross into the visitor’s goalmouth which was only cleared as far as Glenn Murison. The midfielder took a touch before curling in a shot high inside the post for his first goal in just over a year.

Euan Storrier prevented the opposition from regaining the lead keeping out a Martin Wright header while Craig Murray would curl wide of the post minutes later.

Half-Time: Huntly 1 Cumbernauld Colts 1

Four minutes after the restart, Murison tried for a second shooting low following a Ross Still lay-off.
Two minutes later, Euan Storrier did well to turn a Stephen O’Neill effort round the post.

The black and gold’s took the lead in the 53rd minute when a great ball from Ross Still picked out top scorer Reece McKeown down the left channel and he cut in before curling a ball high towards the far post for his fourth of the season. The opposition were protesting an offside against Gavin Elphinstone but Referee Filippo Mazzoni consulted with Assistant Referee Kevin Murray and the goal stood.

The Colts were still pushing for a leveller and goalscorer Fraser Team was denied his second of the evening when Storrier got down to hold.

Colts had the ball in the net and thought they’d squared things up when Cameron Foy got on the end of a Craig Murray free kick only for Assistant Referee Christopher De Sykes to flag for an offside.

With two minute remaining, a superb pass from substitute Cai Matthew picked out Gavin Elphinstone who beat the offside trap and showed great composure to strike low for his first goal of the club.
