A late Paul Esslemont goal booked Huntly an Aberdeenshire Shield Quarter-Final home tie with Turriff United with a 3-2 victory over junior side Aberdeen University.

Goalkeeper Euan Storrier, Defender Christopher Herd and forward Declan Milne returned to the starting eleven but only ten minutes before kick-off, Huntly were forced into a change when full back Alexander Thoirs pulled up following the warm-up. Alexander Jack came off the bench for his first start since 21st September.

Huntly got off to a great start with two goals inside the first five minutes. In the third minute, Reece McKeown’s cross came back off the bar and dropped kindly for the returning Declan Milne to tap in at the back post.

Two minutes later, Kai Ross slipped the ball in for Declan Milne (left) and he ran on to beat goalkeeper Frederick Bjerregaard at his near post.

The Uni pulled one back in the tenth minute when Ross Clark’s corner picked out Caleb Ogwuru whose initial attempt was blocked before Christian Lechner fired home.

Ross Clark would find the side-netting in the 21st minute while team mate Kurtis Turek fired wide from outside the box. Euan Storrier kept the visitors out shortly after with a stop against Ogwuru.

On the half-hour mark, Declan Milne cut in from the right only to see his attempt go by the post. Three minutes later, Ross Still headed wide after a Bradley Manson cross.

Just on the half-time whistle, Reece McKeown lobbed just over the crossbar as Huntly came close again.

Half-Time: Huntly 2 Aberdeen University 1

Huntly injuries problems continued with Kai Ross going off at the break and he was replaced by Paul Esslemont. Also, at the interval, the visitors replaced midfielder Kurtis Turek with Joseph Walker.

The junior side levelled things in the 54th minute when Caleb Ogwuru got in behind the home defence and ignored offside claims to chip the ball over Euan Storrier to equalise.

Ross Still saw a header cleared off the line in the 75th minute following a Cai Matthew corner kick. Still was again denied just three minutes later after he got his head to a Glenn Murison cross.

Huntly’s bad luck with injuries would continue when full back Alexander Jack limped off with seven minutes left to be replaced by midfielder Calum Reid.

With just over four minutes remaining two substitutes combined when a quick Cai Matthew free kick was played into the feet of forward Paul Esslemont whofiredhigh inside the post for the winner for his first goal at Christie Park.
