Last Saturday, 26th November, The Huntly 19's were in action at a VERY windy Meadows at home to Stonehaven in a 19's "A League" match.
We kicked off with the very fierce wind at our backs and started the game very positively and we were getting the ball down to feet and passing the ball reasonably well (which considering the windy conditions, was the only real option available to us). We gradually began to win more and more possession in the centre of the park but unfortunately Euan Wood was booked around the 15 minute mark for persistent fouling. We took the lead through PHILIP MORRISON (his first goal for the 19's), who controlled the ball before firing past the Stoney Keeper with a super finish, 1 - 0 to Huntly then!
We continued to press our oponents all over the park and we then went 2 - 0 up through a SCOTT MOIR goal. Euan Wood had picked up an injury to his knee not all that long after his booking, and he had to be replaced by Connor Melville before half time. We had to defend at times though, as Stonehaven had been awarded one or two rather dubious free kicks by the Referee, we held on and saw the first half out still leading by 2 goals to nil.
Early in the second half we had the opportunity to go 3 - 0 up when we were awarded a penalty, however despite my pre-match instructions for Phil Morrison to take a penalty if we were awarded one, somehow Scott Cooper, our left back, stepped up to take it, and he subsequently missed it, as the ball rebounded back off the post. This was a wee bit of a turning point in the match, as Stonehaven gained a bit of heart by this and they pressed forward for a good spell after this and we had to defend for a fair bit. Stonehaven pulled a goal back following a spell of pressure as we looked a bit nervous, 2 - 1 to Huntly at this point then. I made my final 2 subs when Michael Masson came on to replace Phil Morrison in attack, and Aidan Bowie came on to replace Kieran Dey on the left side of our midfield.
We finished the match as a contest as we scored our third goal through sub MICHAEL MASSON, a superb left footed volley which gave the Stoney Keeper no chance! 3 - 1 to Huntly then. We had made it harder for ourselves than it needed to be, and if the penalty had went in then we would have went on to win more convincingly, however we were well worth our win I felt, and this now takes us back up to 3rd spot in the 19's "A League". Credit must go to each and every one of the lads for trying to play football throughout in such terribly windy conditions, so well done to them all! We had a lot of quite decent performances in the team including Kieran Grant in the centre of midfield and Craig Gordon on the right hand side of midfield, Phil Morrison and Scotty Moir in attack, and in particular Mikey Watson and Skipper Richard Brown at the back for us. Keeper Scott Sinclair was, as always, very reliable for us when called upon.
Man of the match (in MY opinion only!) however, would again have to be our Skipper and right back Richard Brown for another superb display, he is by far, our most consistent player, once again well done Dicky!
Last Saturday's Huntly Under 19's team was : - Scott Sinclair, Richard Brown (Captain), Scott Cooper, Peter Souter, Mikey Watson, Euan Wood, Craig Gordon, Kieran Grant, Scott Moir, Philip Morrison and Kieran Dey. SUBS : - Connor Melville, Michael Masson and Aidan Bowie.
Once again thanks to Jase and Jim for their Assistance as usual on the day!
