Huntly U16`s made the long journey to Hamilton on Saturday for their 4th round game versus Blantyre Victoria BC. For the 2nd week in a running they were playing on the astro turf 3G surface. Theteams kicked off in perfect overhead conditions and Huntly were showing that they were up for the challenge. In the first 5 minutes nothing much was created but both teams sized each other up. David and Ross broke down the right but this came to nothing. However just a minute after David was released through the middle by a great ball from Chris. David set off, out paced their defender and rounded the keeper for a brilliant opener. Score 0-1 Both teams were evenly matched and both created chances. Daniel had a couple of good saves and Neal cleared one off the line. Blantyre scored from a corner when their forward stabbed it in from close range, 22 minutes gone. Score 1-1. For the next 10 mins Huntly were on top and scored again when Ross released David down the right and his cross landed at Jamie G, who finished well from close range. Score 2-1. David then had a run down the right but no takers when his cross came in. Chris then had a shot saved. With the defence standing firm and the midfield pressing the opposing players well when in possession. Huntly then created another chance when Ross had a good run down the right again and his cross landed on Davids head, however he couldn`t direct his header on target. Another chance gone. With the 1st half coming to an end Huntly were hoping to to go in with a one goal advantage at the break. Blantyre had other ideas they had a great shot which found the back of the net. Half time score 2-2. For Huntly the first half was probably the best they have played all season. Everyone was on top of their game. 2nd half. Hoping to start off on the front foot we had an early chance when Rory almost scored with a header. I don`t know what Blantyre were told in their half time team talk but it seemed to have worked from there on in. They took control and went on to score 7 goals with no reply Final Score 9-2. For 50 minutes of this game the Huntly boys more than matched their opponents and showed they can be a very good team. They are going to have to learn not to let their heads go down too easily when things start to go against them. If they can produce the form of the 1st half for a whole game they will be a match for any team in our league. Definately something to build on for the rest of the season. A big thank you to Huntly YFC for the bus and the boys lunch and also to Sandy for their tea. Also to the parents and grand parent who made the long trip to support the team. An good day had by all. Team- Daniel, Rory, Neal, Steven, Jamie W, Chris, Ian, Joe, David, Ross M, Jamie G. Subs- Ryan, Liam D, Ross S, Michael & Craig. Coaches man of the match goes to David.
