Strathspey Thistle 3 Huntly 1

Huntly suffered their fifth defeat of the season and not for the first time this season found themselves conceding three goals in one game as last season’s bottom side Strathspey Thistle ran out worthy 3-1 winners.

The Jags had midfielder Ross Mackenzie absent who was replaced by Jason Hill. Huntly had Captain David Angus, winger Franny More and Ross Campbell out injured. Michael Dunn returned to the starting eleven after missing last week through suspension while Jordan Timmons came on to the subs bench. There were no places in the squad for Myles Brownhill, John Murray, Ross McKenzie and the transfer-listed Don Horsburgh.

The home side threatened first with David Ross and David Ritchie having shots blocked before Mattius Bobrowski was off-target with an overhead kick.

Strathspey took the lead with two goals within the space of two minutes. On eight minutes Mark Gray did well to block a Bobrowski shot on the line and with the defence sleeping defender Terry Swinton was quick to react and fire a low shot in for his first Highland League goal.

Michael Dunn gave a free kick away two minutes later and from the deadball, defender Gary Sutherland powered in a great strike in off the bar.

Huntly pulled one back on thirteen minutes when a free kick wasn’t cleared by the home defence and Richie Taylor returned the ball in to Michael Dunn who stooped to head in his first goal for the club.

On 35 minutes, Richie Taylor was taken down just outside the box. Mark Gray swung the ball in for Peter Bruce who headed wide. Bruce threatened again five minutes later when but was denied by keeper Willie Ridgers who dived in low to get to the ball.

On the stroke of half-time Colin Robertson blootered a shot wide from inside the area.

Half-Time: Strathspey Thistle 2 Huntly 1

Eight minutes into the second half and Polish striker Bobrowski was looking for a penalty when he fell to the ground.

Russell Guild was clipped outside the area on 57 minutes gaining his side a free kick. Colin Robertson rolled the ball to Graham Stark who rattled the bar with a powerful strike.

There was concern in the Huntly defence when the smallest man on the park, David Ritchie got in an easy header after the hour mark.

Mark Gray tried his luck from distance shooting over after catching keeper Ridgers off his line.

Neil Hastie made a blunder on seventy minutes when the keeper came running out his goal only to lose out to Mattius Bobrowski who gained the loose ball to curl in a great shot from out on the left.

The last chance Huntly had of reducing the deficit saw Stuart Soane heading wide from a Michael McGinlay corner.

Strathspey Thistle’s first win of the season takes them up to fourteenth place while Huntly continue to slide further down the table to sixteenth spot only above Deveronvale on goal difference.
