Picture: Derek LoweSam McKenzie was pleased to return from a three month injury lay-off to put in an impressive performance in our 5-2 win over Rothes. McKenzie had not played since picking up an injury in our Aberdeenshire Shield exit to Fraserburgh back in November was happy to weigh in with a couple of assists to contribute to the win.

“It was great to be back, it was a bit of a shock when Gregg (Carrol) named me in the team before the match but despite the lay-off my team mates were supportive, Mark Lawson helped me out as he did much of the running and I felt our fitness levels were good and I’m just happy to be playing again.”

With snow coming down pre-match and after kick-off, the former Keith player admitted the conditions were difficult for both sides.

“When the snow came on and obviously Fraser (Hobday) made a couple of mistakes but he got on with it and got his head down and we told him just to get on with it and he didn’t have anything to trouble him after that. The second half I thought we were brilliant bar a few stray passes but that can happen in those conditions.”

In a game which saw four of the five goals come from corners, the 23 year old gave praise to left back Neale Davidson for his deliveries which helped the side come from 2-1 down to go on and pick up all three points.

“He was mixing it up and he’s got a good delivery into the box but it those conditions we had to fight for it and the bigger boys in the team were getting on the end of them and you could see that when Lawson scored with his header.”

Sam admitted that competition for places at the back is a good thing to have as he came in for Gary Davidson who missed the fixture.

“It’s good to have a bit of competiveness for those places in the squad, everyone plays better when they’re having to push themselves both in training and games to get their place in the squad.”
