A late Kai Ross winner secured all three points as Huntly recorded a 2-1 derby victory over neighbours Keith.

Keith went with an unchanged side from the one which drew with Buckie Thistle one week earlier while Huntly brought in Gary McGowan for Matthew McDonald. There was a late change for the hosts who lost Alexander Jack in the warm-up to injury as Alexander Thoirs came in to replace the former Keith player.

The visitors threatened in the opening stages with Marc Young seeing a long range volley wide of the post.

After three minutes of play, Stewart Hutcheon put Greg Simpson in trouble from a back pass and when the goalkeeper failed to control the ball, nicholasgrayNicholas Gray took advantage to bundle in from close range for his first goal in six games.

Keith look to strike back and came close with Michael Selfridge and Craig MacAskill both finding the side-netting a minute apart. The woodwork would keep out an equaliser after 21 minutes with Young rattling the crossbar from 25 yards out.

Midway through the half, Euan Storrier was on hand to keep out Cameron Keith who was through one on one. Three minutes later, Gary McGowan curled wide from a dead ball after Glenn Murison was tripped outside the box. Huntly had a strong claim for a penalty after the half-hour mark McGowan appeared to be taken down by Young but Referee Mat Northcroft waved aside the claims.

Half-Time: Huntly 1 Keith 0

Keith Manager Dean Donaldson looked for an improvement in the second half and took off Stewart Hutcheon, Andrew Smith and Max Berton at the break replacing them with Scott Begg, Jamie McAllister and Ryan Spink.  Donaldson had gotten a response from his side who started the half brightly. Storrier dived low to keep out a low drive from Macaulay Rae on 49 while Cameron Keith fired across the face of goal minutes later.

Huntly’s Ross Still has had a habit of scoring against his former side recently and came close forcing Simpson into a low drive. Midway through the half, Still received a McGowan pass following a counter attack but Simpson stuck on a leg to keep out the midfielder. Two minutes later, Still and Gray combined to tee up McGowan who rolled a shot wide of the post.

With three minutes remaining, Cameron Booth’s pass into the left channel found kairossKai Ross, the former Keith loan signing cut in from the wide position side-stepping Simpson to fire in from a tight angle for his first goal since mid-September.

The game was set up for a nervy finish when Cameron Keith was blocked in the Huntly box and the ball spun to midfielder jamesbrownieJames Brownie who prodded in from close range to make it two goals in three games.
